Kibo is an online platform that offers a high-demand, job-ready technical degree in Computer Science. But students at Kibo learn more than how to code. Our interdisciplinary core curriculum, based on the Human Skills Matrix, builds essential skills in communication, critical thinking, leadership, and self-management. 1. Web Development
About the Program
From Squarespace to WordPress, numerous solutions exist today for building websites without writing code. But, if you want to be a software engineer, you need to learn how and why websites work under the hood. This class, intended for those with little or no programming experience, teaches the fundamentals of building the web using code. You’ll learn the basics of building a website from scratch, including:
- HTML, and how to adhere to semantic standards for web development
- CSS, and how to write CSS rules, test code and build programming habits
- JavaScript, and how to create interactive websites with dynamic content
Additionally, you’ll explore beneath the surface, and learn about the history, physical underpinnings, and protocols of the internet. By the end of the course, you will have the confidence to describe how the web works and be able to build a website from scratch. You’ll also have a path and community to continue your journey in software development.
2. Phyton Programming
About the Program
Python is one of the most versatile and useful programming languages. From web development and data analytics to AI and machine learning, its real-world applications are virtually limitless. For example:
– Instagram uses Python to scale its service to over 1B users
– Industrial Light & Magic uses Python to create CGI and special effects in hundreds of films including Star Wars
– Spotify and Netflix use Python to power data analytics so they can provide good recommendations and suggestions
Under this programme, you will learn core programming concepts such as variables, functions, conditionals and loops. Throughout your learning, you’ll be supported by your peers, an experienced instructor and mentors who are software developers. You’ll build and present several projects and have a portfolio to showcase your skills. By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills and a community to succeed in college-level computer science.
Programme Eligibility
The class is completely free of charge. To be admitted to the class, you must:
- Be 16-24 years old
- Currently live in Africa
- Be proficient in written and spoken English
- Have basic proficiency in computer usage, though no prior knowledge of coding is expected
Try Kibo is a 100% virtual program and requires learners to have equipment and environment to support virtual learning. Specifically, learners must:
• Have access to a laptop or desktop computer (the program cannot be completed on a mobile phone)
• Have stable internet to complete and submit coursework
• Have a quiet learning environment and internet access to support live video (Zoom) in the duration of live classes.
Application Process
- To apply to Try Kibo, you need to complete the following steps:
- Fill out an application form
- Attend an interview session
- Submit answers to a few video interview questions
- Complete short challenges the week prior to the program beginning
