The Rhodes Scholarships, established in 1903, are the oldest international scholarship programme in the world, and one of the most prestigious. Administered by the Rhodes Trust in Oxford, the programme offers over 100 fully-funded Scholarships each year for full-time postgraduate study at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom – one of the world’s leading universities. Rhodes Scholarships are for young leaders of outstanding intellect and character who are motivated to engage with global challenges, committed to the service of others and show promise of becoming value-driven, principled leaders for the world’s future.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality/citizenship: You must be a citizen of one of the following countries:
    Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, the island of Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone, São Tomé and Principe and Togo.
  • Education/residency: You must have been resident in one or more of the countries listed above for at least five of the last ten years.
  • Age: You must meet either of the below criteria:
    i. On 1 October 2022, you must be at least 18 and have not reached your 25th birthday (i.e. you must have been born after 1 October 1997 and on or before 1 October 2004).
    OR for medical, dental, pharmaceutical, law and engineering students, to allow you to complete your professional internship
    ii. On 1 October 2022, you must be at least 18 and have not reached your 26th birthday (i.e. you must have been born after 1 October 1996 and on or before 1 October 2004)
    iii. On 1 October 2022, you must have met or will meet the academic requirements for completing your first undergraduate degree on or after 1 October 2021 AND must have not reached your 27th birthday (i.e. have been born after 1 October 1995)
  • Academic achievement: You must have already completed, by July 2023, an undergraduate degree (normally a Bachelor’s degree) with an academic background and grade that is a First Class Honours Degree or equivalent which meets or exceeds the specific entry requirements of your chosen full-time course at the University of Oxford (https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/courses/courses-a-z-listing)

Scholarship Benefits

  • The Rhodes Scholarship covers Oxford University course fees,
  • An annual stipend of about £17,310 per annum (£1,442.50 per month) from which Scholars pay all living expenses, including accommodation. Please note – this is not sufficient to cover partners or dependents.

Required Documents

  • At least two of the following documents to confirm that you meet the citizenship criterion (see 2a above), the residency criterion (see 2b above), and the age criterion (2c above):
    i. A certified copy of your birth certificate (or an affidavit of birth)
    ii. A National Identity Card.
    iii. A valid passport (with translation, if necessary)
    iv. A voter’s card
    v. An affidavit notarised by a competent authorirt confirming that you are a bonafide citizen of your country
  • An official transcript from the college or university at which you are studying, or have studied, showing grades achieved (to date).
  • Evidence of residency within the region for at least five of the last ten years, for example official school records.
  • If English is not your first language you should upload evidence of English Language Proficiency (see the Eligibility Criteria above). You should upload a copy of a standardised English test that is recognised by the University of Oxford (e.g. TOEFL / IELTS) along with the test’s marking scheme. Alternatively, you can upload a letter requesting a waiver to this requirement if you meet the University of Oxford’s criteria for a waiver: www.graduate.ox.ac.uk/englishproficiency.
  • A full curriculum vitae which should include specific details about academic qualifications, prizes, scholarships, positions of leadership, employment positions, involvement in student, voluntary, community or political activities and any cultural, musical or sporting accomplishments.
  • A head-and-shoulders colour photograph (jpg format).
  • A personal statement of no more than 750 words
  • An academic statement of study of no more than 350 words.
